WOMEN’S PREVIEW: NWS SPIRIT v MANLY UNITED
The Manly United Women’s 1st Grade team is set for a rare Saturday afternoon game! We’ll be making the short trip to Christie Park for a meeting with North West Sydney Spirit.
Spirit occupy fifth place on the table, three places and four points ahead of Manly. The Macquarie Park side are currently on a five game unbeaten run, and are coming off a high scoring thriller in their last game, when they came from 3-2 down to beat Emerging Jets 5-3. We’ll have to keep an eye on Spirit speedster Morgan Roberts, who scored twice against the Jets and is their top scorer with five goals, while Spirit’s Sarah Morgan was recently named NPL NSW Women’s Midfielder of the Month for April.
Manly will be trying to end a run of three consecutive draws with victory against Spirit and we have a good record against Saturday’s opponents, having not lost to Spirit (or their predecessor North West Sydney Koalas) since 2018. Our defence was impressive on the weekend, with captain Ruby Jackson and NPL NSW Women’s Team of the Week member Phoebe Gilbane working tirelessly to shut out the Bulls attack. Meanwhile, Gema Simon made her Manly United debut on Sunday, a day which also saw the return of flying winger Tegan Biasi to the 1st Grade team – those two could be the ones who fire us to victory at Christie Park.
Our Women’s Reserve Grade team are hoping to end a winless run, but Saturday promises a stern test as the Spirit Reserves are currently in second place. India Horsley received plenty of praise after the weekend’s action, and Manly Reserves top scorer Ruby Egan-Brown will be keen to add to her tally of four goals for the campaign.
