MANLY UNITED RECORD IMPORTANT WIN OVER OLYMPIC
Manly United continued their fine form on Sunday afternoon at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium as they overcame Sydney Olympic 2-0.
A goal in either half was enough for Tom Hopley’s team to secure a major victory in their push for a finals position.
Emily Minett opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, while Tegan Biasi settled the victory 10 minutes into the second half.
With both sides struggling with numbers, key players were missing, giving the opportunity for others to step in and prove a point.
Ruby Jackson returned to the Manly line up after almost two months out and nearly opened the scoring, rising highest from a corner but heading just over.
The visitors looked threatening from corners and that’s how they hit the front after 25 minutes.
A delightful delivery into the area found Emily Minett, who rose highest to beat Anna Ivanovic in the Olympic goal, despite the keeper getting a touch, she couldn’t keep the header out.
Moments after scoring, United should have doubled their advantage, Biasi doing well to cut the ball back for Nicole Stuart, the winger’s effort cannoning back off the cross bar and into the path of Minett, who could not find the target.
Having played 120 minutes mid-week in the Sapphire Cup, you could see that Olympic were fatigued.
Still they created opportunities without getting a proper testing shot off, Rochelle Borromeo and Demi Koulizakis looking most likely.
Ivanovic made a good save not long after, getting down well and then reacting well to hold the ball at the second attempt.
In the second period, Geoff Abrahams made some adjustments, hoping for a response.
Instead, Manly doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second half.
Stuart played an inch perfect cross field ball into the path of Biasi, who was brave with an incoming challenge from Ivanovic, keeping her composure to volley the ball beyond the Olympic keeper.
With 30 minutes to go, Olympic had a chance as Maxine Peak was played through, Jodie Drever rushed out, committed and forced the error from the striker but also fouled her, earning a yellow card for her troubles.
Olympic tried to get themselves back in the game but United stood tall and comfortably closed the game out.
Sydney Olympic 0
Manly United 2 (Minett 25’, Biasi 55’)
