Hendry and King Inducted as Life Members
Earlier this week at the Manly United Annual General Meeting, Hugh Hendry and Michael King were awarded Life Membership of Manly United Football Club.
Hugh and Mike made huge contributions to Manly United Football Club in its earlier days, dating back to the 1960s, but their efforts have been recognised with Life Membership of Manly United.
Hugh Hendry
Hugh Hendry made a huge impact on representative football on the Northern Beaches almost from the day he set foot in Australia, arriving Sydney from England in 1968 and heading straight down to Manly Warringah Soccer Club. He was a key member of the 1968 First Grade side that played in the NSW Federation Division One competition, the first time Manly Warringah had played in the top league in NSW, facing Socceroos Johnny Warren, Peter Wilson, Adrian Alston, Manfred Schaefer, Les Scheinflug on a weekly basis. Hugh also spent time playing for the Dee Why Federation Team but was dragged back to Cromer Park by George Dick to coach Manly Warringah. He took control of The U16s, reserve grade and first grade sides over a number of years and was an enormously influential figure in keeping the club together during the tumultuous years leading into the start of the Warringah Dolphins through mergers and relegation. He was also instrumental in the original construction of the Manly Warringah Football Club and has in recent years taken great pride in watching his two grandsons play for Manly United.
Michael King
Michael King has had a long involvement with football at various levels in Manly Warringah since the 1980’s but had a strong impact on Manly United in and around a time of great turmoil and uncertainty. Mike first joined Manly United in 1987 after he had been involved with local grassroots club Manly Vale. He joined the club to assist with the grounds (well before synthetic fields, grandstands and fences) and officially joined the Board in 1990. He was also a Board Member of the Manly Warringah District Soccer Football Club and Manly Warringah Football Club (Licenced Club). Michael and his family also took a hands on role, running the canteen and Clubhouse kitchen during times of need, as well as his role as Grounds Director and the football operations. He was a member of the Board until 2004 throughout the uncertainty around North Shore, Manly North Shore and the merger with Warringah Freshwater into the Warringah Dolphins. He returned to the Manly United Board in 2006 and did another 11 year stint before the tyranny of distance made it very difficult after moving away from Sydney. To this day he still attends matches and is “a life long supporter”.
Hugh Hendry and Mike King join the first batch of inductees; Kristie Crawford, Ray Fanning, Ken Hutton, Vince Macri, Colin May, Keith Pester, Ida Rigoni and Nick Tomaino.
