WOMEN’S PREVIEW: ILLAWARRA STINGRAYS V MANLY UNITED
The Manly United NPL NSW Women’s team are set for another long road trip, this time heading to the south coast for a clash with Illawarra Stingrays.
Manly won’t be short of motivation after heartbreak in Round 1, when two late Rams goals meant United had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Macarthur. We’ll also be looking to make amends against our south coast opponents after Stingrays did the double over us in 2022.
The combination of travel and opponent means this will be a tough test for Manly. Illawarra have veteran striker Michelle Carney and have also recruited strongly from NPL Capital Football in recent years, meaning that any results gained against them this season will certainly be well-earned.
For Manly, all eyes will be on Caitlin Jarvie after her spectacular strike in Sunday’s season opener, and the attacking midfielder will once again be key to unlocking the Stingrays defence. Manly fans will also be pleased that 2022 Manly top scorer Emily Minett is off the mark for this year – it was her clinically taken penalty that opened the scoring in Round 1.
At the back, 1st Grade captain Ruby Jackson anchored our defence brilliantly on the weekend and will no doubt be vital against a talented Stingrays attack.
